In the second half of last year, slightly fewer people in Switzerland listened to the radio every day. However, listeners stayed tuned in longer than in the same period of the previous year.

Specifically, the daily reach of radio in this country fell from 75% in the second half of 2022 to 72% in the last semester, according to a data analysis published on Friday by the Mediapulse Foundation. This means that linear radio reached an average of 5.3 million people aged 15 and over per day.

Radio usage varies between the language regions. For example, the daily reach in Ticino is above average at 77%, compared to 73% in German-speaking Switzerland and only 69% in French-speaking Switzerland.

While the number of users fell slightly, the daily listening time per person across Switzerland rose from 109 to 112 minutes.

SRG remains dominant

As in previous years, SRG stations dominated the radio stations in all three language regions: they had a market share of around 57% in German-speaking Switzerland in the reporting period. By comparison, SRG still had a market share of just over 60% in the second half of 2019.

Lucerne-based Radio Pilatus remained the private station with the widest reach in German-speaking Switzerland, followed by Radio Central and Radio Argovia. All three belong to CH Media.

For the analysis, Mediapulse examined the usage behavior of 8860 people using an audio matching method. Linear radio usage via headphones and the time-shifted use of radio podcasts were not recorded.
