The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) were able to handle passenger travel on the Gotthard route on Saturday despite the closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. According to SBB spokesman Reto Schärli, all the trains scheduled in the annual timetable ran, although capacity was reduced by around 30% due to the inability to use double-decker trains on the mountain route. All those who wanted to travel were able to be transported, and the extra trains for the Street Parade were also able to run. The journey between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland takes around an hour longer on the Gotthard mountain route than through the Base Tunnel. There were also temporary delays for travellers from Italy due to a person accident that closed the Milan-Chiasso line. The 57-kilometre tunnel between Bodio TI and Erstfeld UR has been closed since Thursday, when an eastbound freight train derailed from Italy. Despite the closure, the SBB were able to provide a stable service for passengers travelling on the Gotthard route.nnnnnnnn
