More and more companies are being founded in Switzerland. In the first three quarters of the current year, 39,166 new companies were founded, more than ever before after nine months in a single year.
Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 2.2 percent, as reported by the Institut für Jungunternehmen (IFJ) on Monday. An average of 143 new companies were founded each day. If the frequency continues in the final quarter, the start-up record from 2023 will be surpassed.
Almost all of Switzerland's major regions contributed to the upward trend. Southwestern Switzerland was in first place (+5.6%), followed by the Zurich region (+2.0%). New start-ups also increased in the regions of Espace Mittelland (+1.5%), Central Switzerland (+1.4%), Eastern Switzerland (+1.1%) and Ticino (+0.8%). Only in Northwestern Switzerland (-0.5%) was there a decline.
Seventh of the workforce self-employed
According to the IFJ, start-ups are not only relevant for innovation and the international competitiveness of the Swiss economy. They are also becoming increasingly important for employment in Switzerland.
Figures from the Federal Statistical Office show that 679,000 or 14 percent of all people in employment in Switzerland are self-employed. At the same time, however, more and more founders are playing it safe by being employed at the same time, IFJ Co-Managing Director Simon May is quoted as saying in the press release.
