In 2023, the Swiss Bartgeier population saw its highest number of successful fledglings since the reintroduction program began around 30 years ago. 25 Bartgeier pairs successfully raised a young bird, and for the first time, a pair in the canton of Tessin was successful. In total, 163 Bartgeier have been released as part of the reintroduction program, with the first successful breeding of released Bartgeier occurring in 2007 in the cantons of Graubünden and Wallis. Since 2019, a pair has also been breeding in the Bernese Oberland. The successful reintroduction of the bird in Switzerland is of great international importance, as many regions of its former range in Eurasia and North Africa are now endangered or extinct.
