More companies have been founded in 2024 than ever before. This means that the record number of companies founded in the previous year is likely to be exceeded for the year as a whole.
At the end of November 2024, 47,983 new companies were founded. This corresponds to an increase of 2.2% compared to the same period last year, as reported by the Institut für Jungunternehmen (IFJ) on Monday. For the year as a whole, the record of 51,637 new start-ups set in 2023 is therefore likely to fall.
According to the IFJ, a positive trend was recorded in almost all major regions. The number of new start-ups only fell in the region of Northwestern Switzerland with the cantons of Basel-Land and Basel-Stadt. The cantons of Appenzell-Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserhoden came out on top with increases of 16 and 15 percent respectively. Close behind are Uri (+10%) and Fribourg and Valais with growth of 9%.
According to the report, company start-ups play a central role in Swiss society. Around 14 percent of all employees are self-employed. The IFJ plans to publish the definitive and final figures for 2024 on December 31.
