Less rigid rules are to apply to working from home in future. The responsible Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation of the National Council submitted a corresponding amendment to the law for consultation on Tuesday. The consultation lasts until December 10.

In view of the developments of recent years, the current employment law no longer reflects today's reality in the world of work, according to the Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation (WAK-N). A majority of the committee therefore considers an amendment to the Labor Act and the Code of Obligations to be unavoidable.

Specifically, the maximum daily working time is to be extended from 14 to 17 hours. In addition, the minimum rest period is to be reduced from eleven to nine hours. Occasional Sunday work on one's own initiative is also to be permitted. The preliminary draft also provides for a right to be unavailable.

A minority is against this

The Commission expects the possibility of more individualized working hours to be beneficial for the compatibility of family and career as well as for care responsibilities.

A minority of the committee requested that the bill not be approved. In their view, the proposed changes threaten to lead to a deterioration in working conditions and health protection, which would ultimately result in high costs for the economy.

Another minority wants to remove the possibility of working on Sundays from the draft law, while a third minority demands that the costs of materials and equipment for teleworking be borne by the employer.
