Relations between Switzerland and the EU are part of the Hungarian Presidency's program. The two parties are important political and economic partners, with strong cross-border trade relations and important cooperation in research and innovation.

This was revealed in the program of the Hungarian Council Presidency, which was published on Tuesday. Hungary will preside over the Council of the European Union (EU) from July to December. This presidency is assigned to an EU member state on a rotating basis for six months at a time. Belgium will hold the Presidency in the first half of 2024 and until the end of June.

Switzerland and the EU are currently negotiating an agreement to regulate their joint relations. The talks are based on a so-called Common Understanding, which both parties have adopted.

In the view of the Hungarian Presidency, the talks will contribute to the strengthening, modernization and further development of bilateral relations. Hungary will also be prepared to accompany the new phase of relations between Switzerland and the EU, according to the program.

The program for the half-year is 41 pages long. The section on relations with Switzerland accounts for around a quarter of the volume.
