The famous French historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie is dead. This was confirmed by the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques, which Le Roy Ladurie once chaired, to the news agency DPA in Paris on Thursday. The scientist was 94 years old.
Le Roy Ladurie is considered one of the best-known and most translated French historians, according to the publishing house Fayard, which has published several books by the scientist. Le Roy Ladurie was particularly well known for his research into rural life in the Middle Ages and the modern era, but also studied the development of the climate.
The historian was born in 1929 and initially worked as a teacher in the 1950s before continuing his career in academia. Le Roy Ladurie holds honorary doctorates from numerous international universities, including Geneva and Oxford.
