Researchers Equip Tiny Bands with Tiny Electrodes

Swiss researchers have successfully attached electrodes to nanobands, which are only one nanometer thick - about 70,000 times thinner than a human hair. This breakthrough, reported in the journal Nature Electronics, is a major advancement for quantum technology. The research team, consisting of researchers from Empa, Peking University in China and the University of Warwick in the UK, has managed to make atomically precise graphene nanobands electrically conductive. In the future, these materials could be used in quantum technology to create smaller and more precise sensors, highly secure communication networks, powerful computers, and tiny power plants that generate electricity from the waste heat of electrical devices. However, the graphene nanobands are not yet ready for commercial applications. In follow-up studies, the researchers aim to control different quantum states on a single band, as well as connecting two nanobands in series to form a so-called double quantum dot.nnnnnnnnnn
