The citizens of the Canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland have not re-elected Philippe Bauer (FDP) to the Council of States. The Council of States is one of the two chambers of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland, the other being the National Council. The Council of States is composed of 46 members elected by the cantons.
Philippe Bauer was a member of the Council of States since 2011 and was running for re-election in the 2021 elections. However, he was not re-elected, with the citizens of Neuchâtel opting for other candidates. This is the first time since the canton's introduction to the Swiss Confederation in 1815 that a member of the FDP has not been elected to the Council of States.
The election results in Neuchâtel were a surprise to many, as the FDP had been the dominant party in the canton for many years. The FDP had held the majority of the seats in the Council of States since 1848. However, the 2021 elections saw a shift in the political landscape, with the Social Democratic Party (SP) and the Green Party (GPS) gaining more votes than the FDP.
The results of the 2021 elections in Neuchâtel are a sign of a changing political landscape in the canton. The FDP has been losing ground in recent years, and the 2021 elections have shown that the citizens of Neuchâtel are ready to embrace new ideas and new candidates. This could be a sign of a new era in the canton's politics, with the FDP no longer being the dominant force.
