The citizens of the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland have not re-elected Othmar Reichmuth to the Council of States. He received 26,695 votes, which was not enough to secure a majority.
Reichmuth, a member of the Swiss People's Party, had been a member of the Council of States since 2011. He was running for re-election against four other candidates, including two from the Social Democratic Party, one from the Green Party, and one from the Liberal Party.
The election was held on October 18th, 2020, and the results were announced on October 19th. Reichmuth received the most votes, but not enough to secure a majority. The other four candidates received a combined total of 27,945 votes, which was enough to deny Reichmuth a second term.
The Council of States is one of the two chambers of the Swiss Federal Assembly, the other being the National Council. It is composed of 46 members, two from each of the cantons and one from each of the half-cantons. The members are elected by the citizens of the cantons and serve four-year terms.
Reichmuth's defeat marks the first time in nearly a decade that the Swiss People's Party has not held a seat in the Council of States. It is a significant setback for the party, which has been the largest in the Swiss Federal Assembly since 2007.
