A fire broke out on a Rhaetian Railway (RhB) carriage on the line between Chur and Thusis near Rhäzuns GR on Thursday morning. The train driver stopped the train and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher. There were no injuries. The hundred or so train passengers had to change to replacement buses.
An engine driver of a train heading towards Chur noticed smoke coming from a control car of an oncoming train, as reported by the cantonal police of Graubünden on Thursday. He warned his colleague by telephone, cantonal police spokeswoman Anita Senti told the Keystone SDA news agency.
The driver of the train heading towards Thusis then stopped the train immediately. When the police arrived, no smoke was detected inside the train, Senti continued. The smoke had probably come from underneath the train. The focus was on technical reasons as the cause of the fire. The railroad line and the cantonal road had to be temporarily closed.
