Roaming charges in Switzerland are a source of frustration for Swiss citizens and visitors alike. Recently, the Swiss Council of States rejected a proposal to set a fixed price limit for roaming charges. The Swiss Federal Office of Communications had contacted Brussels about the issue, and a proposal has been made to include a roaming agreement in the Switzerland-EU negotiations. Citizens from both Switzerland and the EU have expressed their anger at the high roaming charges, and the German and Austrian media have warned people to be aware of the roaming charges when travelling to Switzerland. Despite the public outcry, the Swiss Parliament has been unable to pass any legislation to limit the charges. The Swiss Federal Office of Communications has had informal contact with the EU Commission, but no negotiations have taken place. In response, Swiss National Councillor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter has submitted a motion to include a roaming agreement in the Switzerland-EU negotiations. She believes that such an agreement would be beneficial for both sides, and could be a positive point in any future referendum campaign.
