Switzerland had to weigh up two risks when deciding whether to invite Russia to the Bürgenstock Conference. Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said this to the media in Bern on Monday.
Mr Cassis said that Switzerland had discussed this aspect with many countries. On the one hand, there was a risk that certain countries would not participate without Russia at the table. The other risk was that Switzerland would not have Ukraine at the table.
According to Cassis, it is always a goal at such conferences that the final declaration is approved by all participants. But whether this is achieved depends, of course, on how the conference goes. The aim is for Switzerland to be able to announce at the media conference after the Bürgenstock meeting where a follow-up conference will take place. There are countries that are interested in this.
Switzerland is taking action against disruptive maneuvers against the conference, such as disinformation campaigns, with open and rapid communication, said President Viola Amherd. "We try to counter false reports". It is important to provide information correctly and promptly so that people receive the correct information.
