Same number of lynx in the Simme-Saane region, more in Central Switzerland

The lynx density in the Simme-Saane region has remained stable over the last three years, while it has increased at a lower level in the Central Switzerland West region. This is the result of the Kora Foundation's photo trap monitoring.
The Simme-Saane reference area is located in the cantons of Bern, Fribourg and Vaud. The Foundation for Predator Ecology and Wildlife Management (Kora) set up photo traps at 79 locations during 60 nights in the winter of 2023/2024, as announced on Wednesday. In the process, 45 independent lynx and 10 cubs from at least 9 litters were photographed at 70 locations.
This results in a lynx density of 4.37 lynx per 100 square kilometers of suitable habitat in the Simme-Saane area. This value has remained stable compared to the last monitoring in winter 2020/2021 and is in the upper range of the estimated values in Switzerland.
11 lynxes in Central Switzerland
Kora also set up photo traps in the Central Switzerland West reference area for 60 nights last winter. At the 74 sites in the cantons of Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Bern, 11 independent lynx and 3 to 4 cubs from at least 2 litters were detected.
This corresponds to a lynx density of 1.35. Compared to the last census, this has "increased significantly" and is back in the range of the 2018/2019 value. Particularly noteworthy is the male lynx B1068, which migrated from the canton of Fribourg. However, it is not known which route he took.
