Sanija Ameti (GLP) wants to stay in politics after a scandal involving shots fired at a picture of the Virgin Mary. The co-president of Operation Libero said in an interview with CH Media that giving up her political commitment had never been an option for her.

"As an elected municipal councillor and co-president of Operation Libero, I want to fulfill my obligations to the best of my knowledge and belief," said the Zurich native in an interview with "Schweiz am Wochenende" published on Saturday. However, she could not predict what would happen in the near future.

She feels solidarity from the Zurich GLP municipal council faction. In consultation with the cantonal party, she has voluntarily resigned from the party leadership and the executive committee of the GLP Canton Zurich. She did not wish to comment on the fact that the GLP Switzerland party leadership wanted to expel her from the party.

The GLP Canton of Zurich launched the expulsion proceedings against Ameti demanded by the national party. This process will be conducted internally and will take time, the cantonal party announced in mid-September. "The GLP is my political home," Ameti replied in a recent interview when asked whether she could imagine joining another party.

Dazed with pain

Ameti shot a picture of Jesus and Mary with an air pistol in September. She briefly published pictures of this on Instagram. The 32-year-old then apologized publicly. She also said in a recent interview: "I am ashamed and apologize for it."

In the interview, she also made a connection between the death of her brother and the publication of the shooting training. "It is a contextualization of what happened, not a justification," said Ameti.

While she was firing the shots, she was thinking about her brother. "My brother was killed before we fled," said the Bosnia-Herzegovina-born lawyer. She had tried for a long time and again and again to escape the memory. During shooting training, a pain rose up inside her. "I couldn't bear the pain on my own and wanted to switch it off. And obviously didn't know any other way to deal with it than to post it," she said. It was "impulsive and ill-considered".
