SBB does not currently sell bike tickets for trips abroad

Due to the introduction of a new booking system, SBB is currently not selling tickets for taking bicycles on international journeys. Reservations for bicycle spaces are also currently not possible via the SBB sales channels.
However, it is planned that bookings will be possible again "in the course of this year", an SBB spokeswoman told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday.
SBB thus confirmed a report by Radio SRF on Monday morning. The company regrets the situation and apologizes to passengers for the inconvenience, it said on request.
In the meantime, SBB recommends buying international travel tickets and bicycle tickets from the same partner railroad sales point, as on some trains the bicycle space reservation can only be made together with the ticket purchase. Anyone wishing to travel to Germany by bike should therefore book with Deutsche Bahn (DB), for example.
The umbrella organization Pro Velo Schweiz regrets that it is no longer possible to book international bike tickets. Pro Velo Switzerland's managing director Jürg Buri told Radio SRF that this is particularly regrettable because more people have discovered cycling in neighboring countries in recent years. "We can only hope that SBB will really pursue this at full speed and keep its promise. Until then, this cycling season will be rather uncomfortable for us cyclists," Buri continued.
In fact, according to SBB, around 16,000 international bike tickets were sold to Italy, Germany and Austria in 2023. Meanwhile, no bikes can be taken on the TGV Lyria train between Zurich and Paris, while bikes can be taken free of charge on TER trains. In the same period, over one million bike tickets and day passes were sold for travel by bike in Switzerland, which can be purchased as usual. In addition, over 14,000 bike passes were also sold, SBB reported on request.
