In the Schaffhausen cantonal elections on August 18, there is likely to be a duel between the FDP and SP. Candidates from both parties are vying for the seat of SP councillor Walter Vogelsanger, who is no longer standing. The GLP wants to become a new member of the cantonal government.

As four of the five members of the Schaffhausen cantonal council are standing for re-election, the vacant seat of Walter Vogelsanger (SP) is at the center of the election campaign. Vogelsanger is not standing for re-election after two terms in office.

With Marcel Montanari, the FDP wants to win back the second seat on the cantonal council that it lost to the SP in the 2020 elections. The 38-year-old lawyer Montanari works as a lawyer and university lecturer and has been a member of the cantonal council since 2013.

The SP is putting Bettina Looser forward to defend the second SP seat. The 54-year-old former teacher and journalist has been Managing Director of the Federal Migration Commission since 2021 and also works as a university lecturer. She is a member of the cantonal education council.

The GLP is running with 39-year-old Daniel Spitz. The Head of the Sports Office of the Canton of Schaffhausen has been a member of the Schaffhausen City Parliament since 2021.

No closing of ranks between FDP and SVP

The race between the three new candidates is considered open - the only thing that is clear is that Montanari and Looser are likely to have an advantage over Spitz due to the size of their two parties.

The Greens are not running their own candidate but are supporting the SP candidate. However, the conservative camp did not join forces. At a meeting, the SVP refused to support the two FDP candidates.

The four current members of the cantonal government are considered uncontroversial and therefore have a good chance of being re-elected. They are Martin Kessler (FDP), Cornelia Stamm Hurter (SVP), Patrick Strasser (SP) and Dino Tamagni (SVP).

Should a second round of voting become necessary, this would take place together with the cantonal council elections on September 22. The two conservative parties also currently have a majority in parliament.
