The voters of Schaffhausen have voted against a deputy solution for cantonal councillors who are absent for longer periods: A recount did not change the close result.
According to a recount, 13,352 voters voted in favor of the deputy solution and 13,400 against. The proportion of no votes was therefore 50.1 percent, as announced by the Schaffhausen state chancellery on Monday.
At the first count on Sunday, 13,351 yes votes and 13,399 no votes were registered. In view of the close result, the canton ordered a recount as a precautionary measure, in which one more Yes vote and one more No vote were found.
The bill provided for an amendment to the Cantonal Council Act. If a member was absent for a longer period of time due to illness, a stay abroad, maternity or other reasons, they would have had to be replaced for three to nine months by a non-elected person on the same electoral list.
