Jörg Kukies, the former economic advisor to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), will succeed the dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP). This was revealed to the German Press Agency by government sources.
The Social Democrat Kukies is currently State Secretary in the Chancellery and is considered one of Chancellor Scholz's most important advisors. He is his man for economics and finance and negotiates the final documents of the G7 and G20 summits for him.
After an unprecedented rift, Scholz dismissed Lindner on Wednesday, who is due to receive his certificate of dismissal from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace at 2 p.m. today. Kukies will then receive his certificate of appointment. Scholz, who has accused Lindner of multiple breaches of trust and small-mindedness, will probably be present - at least that is the custom. Lindner subsequently accused Scholz of a "calculated breach of the coalition".
Of the previous four FDP ministers, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing intends to remain in office until the planned new election despite the break-up of the traffic light coalition, but is leaving the FDP. According to dpa information, the posts of Justice Minister Marco Buschmann and Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger will probably be taken over by ministers who are already members of the cabinet.
