German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has categorically ruled out the deployment of ground troops from NATO countries in the war in Ukraine.

At the meeting of more than 20 heads of state and government in support of Ukraine on Monday evening in Paris, it was discussed "that what was agreed among themselves and with each other from the outset also applies to the future, namely that there will be no ground troops, no soldiers on Ukrainian soil sent there by European states or NATO states," said Scholz on Tuesday in Freiburg.

Scholz added that there should also be no involvement of soldiers from afar in the war. It had also been agreed "that the soldiers who are active in our countries should not take an active part in the war", he said. Remote participation would be possible, for example, by programming target data for missiles.

The Chancellor emphasized that this agreement in Paris was "very, very good and very important progress". "It was also very unanimous on this issue."

After the meeting on Monday evening, the French President did not rule out the deployment of ground troops. "There is no consensus today on officially deploying ground troops," he said. "But nothing can be ruled out in the dynamic. We will do everything necessary to ensure that Russia cannot win this war."
