School-free day in Valais in honor of President Amherd

Valais schoolchildren have an extra day off school due to the election of Viola Amherd as President of the Swiss Confederation. This is in recognition of the honor that her election represents, according to a statement from the State Council on Wednesday.
According to the State Council, the day off from school was set for December 22.
On the day before, December 21, the canton will officially celebrate its president. A special train will travel from Bern to Valais for the occasion, according to the press release.
The train will travel through Valais with several stops for speeches. The day will then end in Brig, the home town of the centrist politician.
