The H5N1 avian influenza virus has been detected in a Mediterranean gull in Triboltingen in Thurgau. In consultation with the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), the Veterinary Office of the Canton of Thurgau set up a control and observation area around the site where the virus was found.

On Monday, the "highly pathogenic form of avian influenza H5N1" was detected in a Mediterranean gull that had been found sick, the canton of Thurgau announced on Wednesday.

Following a first case in a dead swan in the canton of Uri, this is the second detection in wild birds in Switzerland this season. The control area that has now been defined covers a radius of one kilometer around the place where the swan was found, while the observation area covers a radius of three kilometers.

In these areas, poultry farms must implement increased preventive measures. These include safety and protective measures to prevent contact between domestic poultry and wild birds. Poultry farmers are informed directly by the veterinary office.

The federal government is now examining whether the observation area should be extended to a three-kilometre-wide strip along the banks of the Rhine and Lake Constance. The decision is expected next week, it was reported.
