The Federal Department of Home Affairs is getting a new Secretary General. Stefan Hostettler, previously Secretary General of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP), will follow his boss Elisabeth Baume-Schneider to the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA).
The Federal Council appointed Hostettler at its meeting on Wednesday, as announced. The 55-year-old will take over the post from Lukas Gresch on February 1. According to the communiqué issued by the federal government, the latter will be changing career direction.
Last December, Gresch ran unsuccessfully to become the new Federal Chancellor and successor to Walter Thurnherr. The Federal Assembly preferred GLP candidate Viktor Rossi to Gresch, who had no party affiliation.
Hostettler is a business economist and communication scientist and also holds a Master's degree in Communication Management and Leadership. He has worked in the Federal Administration since 2016. Prior to his time as FDJP Secretary General, he was Deputy Secretary General of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the FDJP.
Before joining the Federal Administration, Hostettler worked for the SP and as a journalist for the "Tages-Anzeiger" and the former Swiss Press Agency, now the Keystone-SDA news agency.
