Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has accused Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin of trying to prevent the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland next month. "Putin is very afraid of the peace summit," said Zelenskyi on Tuesday during a visit to the Belgian capital Brussels. The Russian president had tried to "derail the international meeting and continues to do so".

The Ukraine peace conference will take place on June 15 and 16 at Bürgenstock NW. In Brussels, Selensky called for participation in the meeting. If US President Joe Biden, for example, does not attend, it would be tantamount to "applauding Putin", he said. Washington has not yet confirmed Biden's attendance. Countries that would not attend the summit were "satisfied" with the war, said the Ukrainian president.

The meeting in Switzerland will be preceded by the G7 summit in neighboring Italy from 13 to 15 June. It is therefore hoped that many heads of state and government, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), will attend the discussions in Switzerland in person. The G7 is made up of Germany, the USA, France, Italy, the UK, Canada and Japan.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that a Ukraine peace summit without Russia's participation would be "absurd". "From our point of view, the conference is completely futile when it comes to finding ways to resolve the conflict over Ukraine," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the state television channel RT. "It is absurd to talk seriously about these issues without the participation of our country."
