Pierre-Yves Maillard, a National Councillor from the Swiss canton of Vaud and President of the Swiss Trade Union Federation, has been elected to the Council of States in the first round of voting. FDP politician Pascal Broulis came in second place and will face Maillard in a second round of voting on November 12th. This election marks a significant victory for Maillard, who is the first trade unionist to be elected to the Council of States in Swiss history. Maillard is a strong advocate for workers' rights and has been a vocal critic of the current government's policies. He is expected to bring a new perspective to the Council of States and to push for progressive reforms.
