Significantly Fewer Vacant Apartments – Lowest Rate Since 2014

The number of vacant dwellings in Switzerland has decreased for the third consecutive year. As of June 1, 2023, 54,765 units were empty, representing 1.15% of the total housing stock (including single-family homes), according to the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). This is a decrease of 0.16 percentage points compared to the previous year. In all seven major regions, fewer vacant dwellings or single-family homes were counted than a year ago. The lowest vacancy rates were 0.42% in the cantons of Zug and Geneva. In 21 cantons, the vacancy rates decreased compared to the previous year and only in five cantons did they increase. The canton of Jura (+0.21 percentage points to 3.17%) had the highest vacancy rate in Switzerland. In the most populous canton of Zurich (0.53% from 0.60%), the rate decreased, as did the Geneva Lake region (1.04% from 1.13%). Overall, there were 6,731 fewer vacant dwellings compared to the previous year, a decrease of 10.9%.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
