The number of protected historical monuments and archaeological sites in Switzerland has increased significantly in recent years. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office on Monday.

In 2022, there were around 91,000 protected architectural monuments nationwide - 21 percent more than in 2016. The number of archaeological sites rose to 53,000, which corresponds to an increase of 27 percent.

This increase reflects "the pressure from the construction sector and the growing efforts of monument conservation", writes the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in the press release. However, it can also be explained by methodological changes in recording.
