Skyguide air traffic control lifted the capacity restrictions in Geneva's airspace on Friday morning as a result of the storms on Tuesday evening. A temporary solution allowed operations to resume, as skyguide announced on Friday.
The heavy rainfall led to flooding in the basement of the air traffic control center in Geneva. As a result, airspace capacity had to be reduced for safety reasons.
According to air traffic control, the flooded basement of the building in Geneva houses the cooling systems of Skyguide's data center. Various measures have been taken to ensure that the air traffic control systems do not overheat and to guarantee the cooling of the control room.
Skyguide has procured an additional external cooling system and a mobile diesel generator to support the existing generators, which have suffered damage. This will ensure that the air traffic control systems continue to function in the event of a power failure. These devices are now in use. However, these are temporary solutions.
It will be "some time" before the damage caused by the water in the various premises has been fully repaired and normal automated operations can be resumed. Thanks to the measures taken, however, skyguide is once again in a position to safely manage air traffic in Geneva airspace at full capacity, the statement added.
In addition, further measures have been taken to prevent the recurrence of such an event in the future.
