The debris avalanche above the Grisons mountain village of Brienz, which is in danger of falling, cannot be blown up. The authorities explained this to those affected on Tuesday evening. They will therefore have to prepare for an evacuation lasting several months from Sunday.

It is not feasible to blast the 1.2 million cubic meters of rock that are currently threatening to bury the mountain village of Brienz GR. This was stated on Tuesday evening at an information event for those affected in Tiefencastel GR.

This would require ten thousand 10 to 20 meter deep boreholes with 360,000 kilograms of explosives, as Andreas Huwiler from the Cantonal Office for Forests and Natural Hazards explained to those affected. This would be thirty times the weight of the Hiroshima bomb. This would probably trigger a landslide of devastating proportions.

The question of the blast came up again and again. The people of Brienz will have to leave the village next Sunday and possibly wait until next spring for the rock avalanche to go away on its own.
