The costume designer Anna van Brée has been awarded this year's "Prix d'honneur" of the Solothurn Film Festival. This was announced by the organizers on Friday. This is the first time a female costume designer has received this honorary award.
"Anna van Brée is a costume designer whose experience, filmography and skills make her an outstanding ambassador for this important profession," said Niccolò Castelli, artistic director of the Solothurn Film Festival, in the press release.
According to the laudation, costume designers are able to say what words cannot always say. The clothing ensures authenticity and that the actors and actresses can embody their roles more easily. For films set in the present day, the craft is therefore particularly in demand.
Anna van Brée was born in Belgium in 1964, studied fashion design in the Netherlands and staging in Belgium. Van Brée has worked on around 20 film productions, including films by Swiss-French director Ursula Meier ("La Ligne") and the RTS drama series "Die Unruhestifter" by Swiss director Delphine Lehericey.
The award ceremony will take place during the Solothurn Film Festival on January 18 at the Landhaus Solothurn. The "Prix d'honneur" is endowed with 10,000 francs and is a sign of appreciation for "the achievements of filmmakers, many of which have been made in secret and without much publicity", as the organizers of the Film Festival wrote.
