The SP, the Centre Party and refugee organizations have welcomed the extension of S status for Ukrainians. The SVP, on the other hand, criticized the Federal Council's decision.
The early decision to extend protection status until March 2026 creates security for refugees and employers, the Swiss Refugee Council (SFH) wrote in a press release on Wednesday. The organization also sees a need for action in the areas of childcare and language learning.
The SP also called on the authorities to do more for the integration of those affected. Refugees from Ukraine need to find a job more easily in order to gain a foothold as quickly as possible, the SP stated. Employers, on the other hand, need planning security in view of the shortage of skilled workers.
According to the SVP, the Federal Council failed to address the shortcomings associated with the S status. The extension would cost Swiss taxpayers billions for years to come, the party wrote in a communiqué. The main problem with protection status is that it is linked to the entitlement to social welfare. There is practically no incentive or compulsion to work.
