SP Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has been re-elected in the first round of voting. The Minister of Justice received 151 out of 216 valid votes. 28 ballot papers were blank, with further votes going to Gerhard Andrey and Eva Herzog.

Baume-Schneider has been a member of the federal government for a year. The soon-to-be 60-year-old SP politician from Les Breuleux JU succeeded Simonetta Sommaruga, who stepped down after twelve years in the Federal Council, at the beginning of 2023. Baume-Schneider took over the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).

The Federal Councillor responsible for the asylum dossier faced headwinds in her first year in office. The SVP in particular repeatedly accused Baume-Schneider of not being up to her task.

Some of the criticism can be dismissed as an election campaign maneuver. But Baume-Schneider is not undisputed even in the center-left camp. In the media, she is described as "appreciated as a person, but weak in terms of content and strategy". According to opinion polls, she is considered to have little influence.
