Eric Nussbaumer, an SP politician from Basel, is the new President of the National Council, making him the highest-ranking Swiss politician for one year. The National Council elected him on Monday at the start of the new legislature with 180 out of 192 valid votes.
Nussbaumer is the 25th Social Democrat since 1919 to take the presidential seat. His 180 votes are an above-average result. According to the parliamentary services, the long-term average is 155 votes.
Isabelle Moret (FDP) from Vaud holds the record number of votes for President of the National Council. She was elected in 2019 with 193 out of 198 valid votes. Elisabeth Blunschy, then a CVP National Councillor from Schwyz, received the fewest votes to date in 1977, namely 111.
After an interruption of a good ten years, the presidency of the National Council is once again going to the Basel region; Maya Graf (Greens) held the office in 2012/13. Nussbaumer is the fifth representative of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in the National Council presidency.
