The trial against an arsonist convicted by the See-Gaster District Court began in the St. Gallen Cantonal Court on Wednesday morning. The 36-year-old man wants to avert the inpatient measure ordered by the court of first instance.

At first instance, the 36-year-old man was sentenced to an unconditional prison sentence of 38 months for several cases of arson in Schmerikon SG between 2021 and 2022. The accused was a member of the fire department and helped to extinguish the fires each time. He acted out of boredom, he explained to the St. Gallen cantonal court on Wednesday.

He accepted the guilty verdicts, but is trying to avert the inpatient measure ordered by the court of first instance - popularly known as "minor detention". This has no predetermined end. Release depends on the success of the treatment.

The man has a criminal record for a series of fires in Meilen ZH in 2007. He was sentenced to prison at that time. He underwent outpatient therapy.
