The storm on Tuesday evening caused damage of at least 20 million francs in the canton of Vaud. This corresponds to an initial estimate by the cantonal buildings insurance (ECA).
"However, it is still far too early to take full stock of the event. This can only be drawn up in a few days' time," ECA spokesman Rafael Stuker told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Wednesday.
The ECA expects to receive between 2,000 and 3,000 claims over the next few days. "The majority of the claims come from the Morges region," said Stuker. "But damage has also been reported from the northern Vaud region, for example from Orbe, Champvent and L'Auberson."
In Morges on Wednesday evening, the river of the same name burst its banks after heavy rainfall and flooded numerous cellars and underground garages. No people were injured.
