On Monday afternoon, the residents of La Chaux-de-Fonds NE were met with a scene of destruction after a storm swept through the city of 37,000 inhabitants shortly before noon. The storm, which lasted only a few minutes, had wind gusts of more than 200 kilometers per hour. As a result, all bus services were suspended and the city was in shock. The storm caused a crane to collapse onto a nearby street, killing one person and crushing two cars on the parking lot. Police cars, ambulances and fire trucks drove around the city, and sirens could be heard. Many people were taking pictures of the destruction. The streets were littered with broken tiles and metal, and many trees were uprooted or snapped in half. In addition, many cars were damaged, terrace furniture was scattered, and windows and shutters were broken. A building in the industrial area at the entrance of the city was severely damaged, and parts of the facade of the ice rink were also affected. In the aftermath of the storm, people were using shovels and brooms to clean up the mess.
