The purpose of his mission was to strengthen bilateral relations with the distant country. Cassis, head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA), said the visit emphasized Switzerland's desire to intensify its relationship with Australia. No specific mutual agreements were discussed. Cassis said the conversation was positive and that Switzerland expressed its willingness to strengthen its relationship with countries with a similar orientation in light of increasing polarization. Climate change and research issues were also discussed. Cassis' visit to Australia is the second to last stop on his trip to the Asia-Pacific region, after Indonesia and Singapore.
