According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), Switzerland is in the midst of a strong Covid-19 wave. This has been recorded since August and intensified at the beginning of November. The latest figures indicate a further increase at a high level.
This means that there are also more Covid-19 infections in Switzerland than flu infections. FOPH survey systems are currently measuring 45 Covid-19 cases compared to seven flu infections. The epidemiological threshold for influenza was exceeded at the beginning of November, the FOPH announced on Monday in response to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Outpatient consultations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein indicate an increase in respiratory infections since the start of the season. Compared to the two previous weeks, the consultation rate for influenza-like illnesses has risen, the FOPH wrote in its information portal for communicable diseases. The mandatory laboratory reports for influenza are still at a low level, but are increasing significantly. The data refer to the week from November 18 to 24.
Extrapolated to 100,000 people, 160 of those affected require medical consultation due to an acute respiratory infection and 90 due to a flu-like illness, the report continued. Data from the National Reference Center for Influenza shows 45 confirmed Covid-19 cases compared to seven influenza cases. Most of these cases have been laboratory-confirmed in Ticino and French-speaking Switzerland.
The FOPH's data is based on information from the Sentinella reporting system. Outpatient doctors provide information on initial consultations due to acute respiratory infections or flu-like illnesses in doctors' surgeries or during home visits. The reports are used to make weekly projections.
