In almost all areas of education, interest in exchanges and mobility outstripped supply in 2023. Due to limited financial resources, the number of funded mobilities fell by six percent to 34,300.
Demand exceeded the number of approved mobilities by a third, Movetia, the national agency for the promotion of exchange and mobility in the education system, announced on Tuesday. The result can be partly explained by the number of mobilities at universities and universities of applied sciences, which could not be increased for budgetary reasons.
Nevertheless, Movetia notes that international mobility in school education has more than doubled. The mobility of learners in Switzerland has also developed positively.
Last year, the total budget amounted to CHF 66 million. This amount was provided by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) and the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO).
This year, the federal government's 2025-2028 education, research and innovation policy and the 2025-2028 cultural dispatch will be discussed in Parliament. They provide for additional funding for exchanges and mobility. Negotiations on Switzerland's inclusion in the EU funding program for education, youth and sport, Erasmus+, are running in parallel.
