Summaries of reports by the Federal Council and the Federal Administration will now be published in the three official languages German, French and Italian. Following the National Council, the Council of States also tacitly adopted a corresponding motion by National Councillor Alex Farinelli (FDP/TI) on Tuesday.
The business is now ready for the final vote.
Until now, the now standard summaries of the reports were only presented in one or two official languages. The State Policy Committee of the Council of States (SPK-S) unanimously requested the motion's adoption in advance.
However, the committee supported the Federal Council's clarification that the language requirement should apply to all Federal Council and Federal Administration reports that are published on departmental websites. This does not apply to reports that are not published.
The National Council adopted the motion in the fall session. According to motion author Farinelli, the reports of the Swiss Federal Audit Office could serve as a model, as these always consist of a detailed version in one language and summaries in the other official languages. He also added that these are usually supplemented by a summary in English, but this is not prescribed by the motion.
Stefan Engler (center/GR), spokesperson for the SPK-S, said in the Council that in the near future and with today's possibilities, the question would soon arise as to why the fourth national language should not also be used. "You can do as well with the fourth national language as you can with English," Engler continued.
