Repairs to the A13 San Bernardino highway are likely to lead to even longer traffic jams than usual southbound during the summer vacations. The TCS recommends using passes in Graubünden, the Lötschberg or the Great St. Bernard as alternatives to the San Bernardino and Gotthard.
The summer vacations have already begun in some cantons and the volume of traffic heading south is increasing daily. Between the beginning of July and the end of August, an exceptionally high volume of traffic and long traffic jams can therefore be expected on Swiss roads.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) expects traffic jams on the Gotthard in front of both portals to significantly exceed ten kilometers this summer. The situation will be exacerbated this year by the closure of a section of the A13 San Bernardino highway - a possible alternative route - following a landslide.
As alternative routes, the TCS recommends several passes in Graubünden that lead to Italy for travelers from eastern Switzerland. From north-western Switzerland, the Bern region and the Zurich conurbation, you can take the Lötschberg car transport to Valais. From there, the road or car transport on the Simplon Pass leads to Italy or the Nufenen Pass to Ticino. You can also travel to Italy through the Great St. Bernard Tunnel via Martigny VS.
