In future, Europol will also be able to issue alerts on third-country nationals in the Schengen Information System (SIS) if they are suspected of terrorism or serious crime. This also requires an amendment to the law in Switzerland. The Federal Council has opened the consultation process for this.
It announced this on Wednesday following its meeting. The amendment to the Federal Act on the Federal Police Information Systems is necessary because it is a further development of Schengen. According to the Federal Council, however, the principle remains that only Schengen member states can issue alerts in the SIS.
The consultation will last until June 28, 2024.
