The Swiss People's Party (SVP) has made significant gains in the Swiss National Council elections, according to a first national projection from GFS Bern on behalf of SRG. The SVP is expected to gain nine seats, with gains in the cantons of Bern, Vaud, Aargau, St. Gallen, Ticino, Fribourg, Graubünden, Neuchâtel, Jura and Glarus. The Green Party is expected to lose seven seats, with losses in Zurich and Bern. The Social Democratic Party (SP) is expected to remain stable, while the Centre Party and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) are expected to be almost equal.

The SVP is the clear winner of the National Council elections, with a voter share of 29%, an increase of 3.4 percentage points from 2015. The Green Party has lost 4.1 percentage points and is below the 10% mark with 9.1%. The SP is expected to gain slightly, with a voter share of 17.2%. The Centre Party could overtake the FDP with a voter share of 14.7%, while the Green Liberal Party (GLP) is expected to lose 0.7 percentage points with a voter share of 7.1%.

Green Party President Balthasar Glättli admitted that the election results were a setback for his party. SVP Fraction President Thomas Aeschi said that the party was not in a celebratory mood despite the significant gains, and that a new policy was needed to address the challenges facing Switzerland.
