The delegates of the SVP Switzerland will launch the border protection initiative at their special party conference in Basel this Saturday. Among other things, this initiative calls for systematic controls at the Swiss border, as the party announced in January. Meanwhile, the delegates' meeting of the centrist party is taking place in Ticino.

SVP parliamentary group president Thomas Aeschi will announce the exact text of the initiative and present it to the delegates for launching, as can be seen from the program.

The popular initiative entitled "Stop asylum abuse" calls for further measures in addition to border controls. For example, Switzerland should not grant asylum to people who enter Switzerland via a safe third country in order to apply for asylum. The party also wants to limit the annual quota for granting asylum to a maximum of 5,000 people.

The fact that systematic border controls are not compatible with the international Schengen Agreement on the abolition of stationary border controls at internal borders is likely to cause debate. This only provides for temporary border controls in the event of a threat to internal security.

Center Party meets in Arbedo-Castione

The delegates' meeting of the Center Party will also take place on Saturday in Arbedo-Castione near Bellinzona. According to the program, the delegates will adopt the slogans for the federal referendums on 9 June.

Party President Gerhard Pfister is expected to give a speech on the topic "Stop the premium explosion! Put the brakes on costs". In it, he is expected to campaign for his party's initiative, which will be put to the vote on June 9 and demands the introduction of a cost brake in the healthcare system. According to the party, Ticino National Councillor Fabio Regazzi will speak on the Electricity Act.

A partial revision of the federal party's statutes is also on the agenda. This involves adapting the Italian and Romansh names of the party.
