The SVP will choose one of the officially nominated SP candidates to succeed Federal Councillor Alain Berset. However, SVP parliamentary group president Thomas Aeschi did not mention a name in the United Federal Assembly on Wednesday. He said that concordance was important to his parliamentary group.
Both SP candidates are positioned "on the extreme left of the SP", Aeschi noted. He insisted on concordance: the votes for the Green Gerhard Andrey in the previous ballots for the current members of the Federal Council will show who stands for concordance. The Greens want to contest an FDP seat with National Councillor Andrey from Fribourg.
Depending on the outcome of these elections, the SVP will elect an SP representative to the government to replace Berset in the spirit of concordance, namely one of the official nominees. The SVP also wants stability in uncertain times. It wants to re-elect all current members of the Federal Council, as Aeschi said.
Aeschi went on to say that the composition of the national government must ensure an appropriate representation of the different parts of the country. This is one of the reasons why the SVP does not want to elect a Green from Fribourg to the seat in Ticino. All parts of the country should be included in the government.
