The delegates of the SVP Switzerland met on Saturday at a special party conference in Basel to launch the border protection initiative. Among other things, the text of the initiative provides for systematic checks on people entering the country.
If this is not compatible with an international agreement, the Federal Council should renegotiate. If this is not successful, "Switzerland shall terminate this agreement at the earliest possible date", as stated in the text submitted to the delegates.
In addition, people who enter the country via a safe third country should not be granted entry or asylum. The text also stipulates that the Federal Council can set a maximum annual asylum procedure quota of 5,000 people.
A large police contingent guards the party conference at the Congress Center Basel. A group of around 20 people protested against the SVP's migration policy with banners in front of the entrance.
