The Swiss energy platform Open EP and the Italian energy group Eni are working together to secure the gas supply in Switzerland. A corresponding agreement is supported and co-financed by the Swiss regional companies, as Open EP announced on Tuesday.
According to the agreement, the gas flow from France through Switzerland to Italy can be used in part for Switzerland's gas supply security. In the event of interruptions or significant reductions in gas flows from Germany, it would be possible to import gas through Eni.
The agreement will enter into force on December 2, 2023 and will be valid until September 30, 2024. During the period of validity of the trade agreement, the Swiss authorities will not take any measures that could affect Eni's rights to gas transport capacities through Switzerland, according to the press release.
The agreement is the result of a declaration of intent signed in July by the Italian Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Pichetto Fratin and Energy Minister Albert Rösti.
