The Swiss hotel industry recorded slightly more overnight stays in July than in the previous year. This means that the strong momentum of the previous two months has weakened. However, the industry is still on course to exceed the previous year's record figure.
Specifically, the number of overnight stays rose by 0.3% to 4.8 million in July, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. The increase is due to foreign guests. Here, overnight stays rose by 3.1 percent to 2.6 million. In contrast, hotels recorded a decline of 2.8 percent to 2.2 million domestic guests.
Record remains in sight
This means that momentum has slowed considerably compared to the previous months. In June, the increase was still 2.4%, in May it was even 5.0%. From January to July, however, there was still a significant increase of 2.0% to 24.8 million overnight stays compared to the previous year.
Here too, the increase is due to guests from abroad. With a total of 12.7 million overnight stays, the increase here amounted to 4.7 percent. In contrast, Swiss guests recorded a decline of 0.6% to 12.2 million. This shows that, after the coronavirus pandemic, the Swiss are increasingly traveling abroad again, but that more tourists are coming to Switzerland again.
Overall, the Swiss hotel industry remains on course to exceed the record number of overnight stays from the previous year. In 2023, the 40 million mark was exceeded for the first time with 41.8 million overnight stays.
