In April 2024, Swiss hotels welcomed fewer guests than in the same period last year for the first time in any month this year. According to an initial estimate by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday, the number of overnight stays fell by 3.2% compared to the same month last year.
This puts an end to the boom in the hotel industry, at least for the time being. From January to March, overnight stays were still clearly on the rise. And in 2023, local hotels recorded more overnight stays than ever before in a single year, with more than 40 million for the first time.
Significantly fewer Swiss guests
The decline in April is primarily due to the development of domestic guests. The hotel industry recorded 5.6 percent fewer overnight stays by Swiss guests. In contrast, the number of guests from abroad was only 0.8 percent lower than in the same period last year.
The definitive and absolute figures for overnight stays in April will be published by the FSO on June 6. At the same time, the office will provide an overview of the development of the 2023/24 winter season.
